Rob
Brought up in the Lake District by two mountain goats, he has been walking the hills since he first managed to climb out of the child carrier. Some years later his Dad attached a rope to his waist to stop him from leaving him behind on rocky outcrops. After a year in Ecuador on an alpaca and llama farm Rob came to Peru for the first time. Bowled over by the landscapes, culture and people he returned on the pretext of one final visit – and that was 13 years ago.
Nick
Built like a giraffe, Nick always had the legs for a long stroll in the country. With a best mate living in Peru, the choice of destination was never much of a challenge…but the treks are a very different animal. Nick constantly ponders how every trip involves twice as many uphills as downhills, while we always end up where we set off. And his ability to conjure rain wherever he goes has led to countless offers of domicile from drought-ridden nations; Australia gave him citizenship in 2006 and have reservoirs that are now slopping over with quality rainwater.
Nick’s ambition is to find something slightly more impressive than Machu Picchu. He’s a bit of a dreamer.
Nick and Rob
Best of friends since 1990 when they met in Newcastle and started cycling, bridge jumping, tree-climbing, many other nameless silly antics and playing jazz together. Since Rob moved to Peru in 1997 they have been exploring the mountains near Chachapoyas on various trips.
Hey boys what a wild adventure you are undertaking again!! Travel safely – we look forward to more updates over the coming weeks .The Canales
Helen… the camp cooking is in need of some help! (and I don’t mean we have moustaches and stir with a limp wrist). Fill the freezer for Ron, and see you next week! (please.)

Hope that back pack is still in one piece. I do not think it was made for carring big logs of wood and bricks. Looking forward to seeing lots of great video’s and photo’s. I am missing my walking partner. Doreen
After a bit of tinkering with chromoly tubing and a riveter, the pack can carry 4 car batteries and a recently expired fire extinguisher! Macpac never replied to my email with photos of the broken frame, probably because those Kiwis are so far far away. Hope youre ready for these mountains Doreen… they’re waiting!x
Hmm. Hard to choose a favourite between two such handsome, erudite and rugged explorers.
Ooh me me! CHOOSE ME Miss Mahto! Cos I’m like a puppy in the window really! (ps I’m the tall puppy) x
Fudge loves the look of the Andean Wolf so could you bring one back for us – she loves a good furry toy to play with. Hail snow and rain abound – hope its better where you are .Take care – travel well – Hugs all round The Canales
